McCalla is an unincorporated community located in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. It is situated approximately 22 miles southwest of Birmingham and is part of the Birmingham metropolitan area.
Originally known as Tannehill, the area was renamed McCalla in honor of Richard Pearson McCalla, a prominent naval officer during the Civil War.
McCalla is home to the Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park, which features preserved historic buildings and artifacts from the former Tannehill Ironworks, a major iron-producing site during the 19th century.
The community is primarily residential, with a mix of suburban neighborhoods and rural properties. McCalla has seen significant growth in recent years, with new housing developments and commercial establishments being established in the area.
McCalla is served by the Jefferson County School System and is close to major highways such as I-20 and I-459, providing easy access to nearby cities and amenities.
